What happens in radioactive decay?

What happens like what is actually happening to the atom. Also, why is radioactive material so dangerous to humans. Can you please make this a simple answer like a few sentences because I looked it up online and its really complicated everywhere else. Also, this is not for homework I just like learning new things.
