Can i charge nimh batteries in a hand held radio that was designed to charge nicad batteries?

about 15 years ago i purchased a uniden pro340xl hand held cb radio. this was before the advent of nimh AA batteries. the radio was designed with a charging port so that it could charge AA nicad batteries in about 12 hours. my question is can use the radio to charge AA nimh batteries or will it cause problems ie blowing up or catching fire?
